MR. TRESS’S MODEL–A SYMBOL IN MY LIFE

A SYMBOL IN MY LIFE

A symbol in my life is the Palace Theatre in Hamburg, NY.  The Palace Theatre symbolizes childhoodhappiness, and timelessness to me.  It symbolizes childhood because as a child riding in my mom’s car, every time I went into town, I’d hope we’d drive by the theatre so I could look at it and see what movie was playing. This also relates to why it represents happiness to me.  No matter what age I’ve been, I’ve always enjoyed seeing movies there, and even if I’m not able to actually go see a movie there, driving by or even just thinking about it makes me happy.  The Palace Theatre also represents timelessness to me because it really hasn’t changed greatly, it seems, since it opened in 1926.  For all those years, it has been a place that has provided an escape from the stresses of the everyday world.palace theatre

CLASS OF 2020–HOW TO CREATE YOUR BLOG

STEPS TO MAKING YOUR BLOG

1)  Go to edublogs.org, click “Create a blog” (something like that) enter all your info.  Be sure not to lose your username / password…this is why they want your (non-school) email…in case you forget your password. I think it would be smart to just use your school ID and password. I also recommend keeping your passwords in a place only you know about.

2)  Go to Dashboard, Find “My class,” click “Join class”, search “tress”, click “send request to join.”  This is also very important because you need to be in my class and once I “accept” you, will be able to choose the “cooler” themes.  Themes are backgrounds, so it’s important I approve your request because you’ll be able to choose from 75 backgrounds, not just 5 backgrounds.

3)  Make your blog!  Customize the background, colors, etc. so it looks the way you’d like it to.

WRITE A BLOG POST ON A THEME IN SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE

I’d like you to write a blog post on one of the themes of the novel, although we’ve barely started.  This will help get your brains thinking about the overall themes.  This can be informal, but use good mechanics.  Pick one of the themes below and write at least 150 words on it.  I don’t want to give you hints on what to write…just let it roll.

ALIENATION (the state or experience of being isolated from a group or an activity to which one should belong or in which one should be involved)

MEN AND MASCULINITY (possession of the qualities traditionally associated with men)

MORALITY  (the standard of society used to decide what is right or wrong behavior)

DEATH

I’m Super

A huge part of who we are is how we grew up.  I came to America after my mother and father placed me in a space shuttle only moments before my home planet Krypton exploded; I suppose you could say I arrived with a bang.  Upon crashing to Earth in Kansas, my Ma and Pa Kent recovered me from the shuttle and raised me as their own.  Bruce Wayne certainly went through the challenge of watching his parents killed in front of him, but I was raised by parents with very little money while he had everything given to him.

As a humble superhuman, I don’t like to brag, but I would like to state that I possess the following:

–Super strength (I can move planets nbd)

–Unassisted flight

–Super speed (nearly as fast as The Flash nbd)

–Invulnerability (can survive nuclear explosion nbd)

–Super vision (can observe events on the atomic and microscopic level nbd)

–Mental powers (beat Flash in speedreading nbd)

–Stamina (can survive w/0 food, water, or rest indefinitely nbd)

***I knew these of course but thanks to http://superman.wikia.com/wiki/Superman%27s_Powers_and_Abilities

I don’t want to criticize Batman much because he already has some issues, but the choice is clear…I’m the better superhero.  Batman is a rich guy who spent enough money to become a hero.  Who would you call first?  The answer is clear.

ENG 13 CLASSES–Writing with VOICE–Write a blog post as Superman

VOICE is one of the 6 Traits of Writing… see below

–VOICE is very hard to explain and teach, but here I go…

VOICE–def.–the distinct personality of a piece of writing; the “heart and soul” of your writing

***If a piece of writing has voice, I can tell a living, breathing, feeling person has written it.  There is passion behind the words!

Here’s an example of having VOICE in writing, courtesy of an Evan Bellavia blog post…

(Sighs) The 40 year old me inside is about to go off on a little rant so please bear with me. So yesterday, I was watching the Time Warner News (yes I know it’s called Spectrum, but I’m still gonna call it Time Warner because Spectrum is just blah) and I saw a story about how Uber is developing a new food delivery system called “Uber Eats”…….. Ok?

Let’s do a writing activity to work on incorporating VOICE into our writing.  You won’t be writing as yourself though, you’ll be writing as Superman.

YOUR TASK:  Write an at least 200-word piece as Superman, explaining to the general public, in detail, why he is a better superhero than Batman.  Type this on your blog at edublogs.org
